YouTube reveals stringent measures it takes on creators for violating community guidelines

YouTube today announced new policy changes that come in to effect after the controversy surrounding YouTube creator Logan Paul. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki in her blog post mentioned that from now on strict regulations would be implemented if it found anyone violating its policies. According to her, YouTube takes stringent measures on those creators violating community guidelines. She says that Youtube reserve, the right to cancel its ads monetization programs like Google preferred and also stop recommending the channel’s videos on its network.

It is well-known that YouTube has been serving as a wonderful platform for budding creators who are making it as a full-time profession. But on the other side of the coin, there are those creators who wish to rise to fame within a short time by posting inappropriate and community insensitive videos. They wish to garner the attention of the viewers by creating a sort of sensationalism. But with the recent international outrage that arose after the Logan Paul incident, Youtube has now decided to implement stricter policy norms.

The case of Logan Paul:

Youtuber Logan Paul has uploaded a video that features a dead body of an apparent suicide victim in Aokigahara forest in Japan. In the video, he filmed the suicide victim up close with the face blurred but displayed his hands, clothes and abandoned bag. Then the group continues to record each other’s reactions. Paul Logan pointed out in the video to take mental help for people suffering from depression and anxiety. He uploaded the video with a viewer discretion to his 15 million subscribers, most of whom are children. But the footage garnered wide social outrage demanding Youtube to suspend his account. Many of them pointed out that the video may traumatize young children and teenagers.

Later Paul issued an apology saying that he intended to raise awareness for suicide and its prevention. He mentions that he did not do it for views and also says that he did not monetize the video. He further gave assurance that he will not upload such videos in the future. Reportedly Logan Paul earns an estimate of $1.2 million in ad revenue per month from his YouTube channels. However, it is not sure for how long YouTube keeps his revenues on hold and whether it permanently suspends his account.

YouTube vice-president of product management in a blog post wrote “In the past, we felt our responses to some of these situations were slow and didn’t always address our broader community’s concerns. Our ultimate goal here is to streamline our response so we can make better, faster decisions and communicate them clearly,” Bardin concludes. “We believe strongly in the freedom of expression and we know that the overwhelming majority of you follow the guidelines and understand that you’re part of a large, influential, and interconnected community. But we also know that we have a responsibility to protect the entire community of creators, viewers, and advertisers from these rare but often damaging situations. We expect to issue these new consequences only in a rare handful of egregious cases, but hopes they will help us prevent the actions of a few from harming the broader community.”
