Stunning 8K OLED Displays Boast 1062 PPi in 8.3-inches and 662 PPi in 13.3-inches: SEL

As crazy as it sounds Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) has developed stunning 8K OLED displays that boast an astounding Pixel density of 1062 PPI and 662PPi in 13.3-inch display. It is touted to be the industry’s first 8K OLED displays meant for tablets as well as laptops. Both the displays pack the same display resolution of 7680X4320.

Things get more interesting as the smaller display of 8.3-inches packs the same resolution (7680X4320) as the larger display of 13.3-inches. As you can imagine when the pixels get that close in case of 8.3-inches and as a result, there is an impact on the refresh rate which is only 60hz. On the contrary, the 13.3-inch display that boasts a pixel density of 662PPi has an amazing refresh rate of 120hz that equals the refresh rate of Apple’s iPad Pro displays.

How are such monitors of 8K OLED displays made?

The monitors are made using Crystalline oxide semiconductor technology. Both the displays use a colour filter that depends on  CAAC-IGZO(c-axis-aligned crystalline indium gallium zinc oxide). It is recognised as one of the next generations materials that offer high-resolution low power displays. The monitors offer better touch performance and the narrower bezels compared to the regular displays. Also, the panels can handle higher resolutions with much ease, concurrently drawing less power.

Also, SEL is said to be working on another exciting development! Foldable smartphones are deemed to be the devices of the future. Although every now and then there has been much hype surrounding them, so far there is nothing concrete as such. SEL is also said to be working on the bendable 8.3-inch foldable display.

The company claims foldable display to come with a pixel resolution of 1920X1200. Also, the panel can easily handle 10000 bend/unbend cycles that translates roughly to 27 folds per day spanning over a period of one year. Also, the OLED panel can display BT.2020 colour space. SEL is currently working with CAAC-IGZO looking for a practical implementation before proceeding to the production of the displays.
